Come join us Friday May 13, 2022 – Sunday May 15, 2022 for the Camp Aliceville WWII POW Camp Reenactment located at the Aliceville Museum in Aliceville, AL. Camp Aliceville was one of the largest POW camps in America from 1943-1945 housing over 6000 mostly Afrika Korps prisoners. To honor the history of Aliceville’s great contribution to the war and honor all of those who served…we will be putting on a period accurate reenactment of the WWII prison camp for those days. We welcome reenactors to portray Rommel's Afrika Korps and Luftwaffe POW's as well as American MP's and Alabama State Troopers. In addition, we welcome any period correct vehicles such as military Jeeps and trucks. The town will partially reconstruct the fence, gate, and possibly guard towers. POW's will arrive by train at Aliceville depot as actually happened and they will then march approximately 2 miles thru town to Camp Aliceville compound as spectators look on. POW housing will be simulated with rows of canvas WALL TENTS which all participants are encouraged to set up and live in for the weekend (no A's, fly's, or modern tents). Scenarios to be reenacted including a couple of attempted escapes and memorial to Erwin Rommel that POW's conducted after hearing of his death. Use of German language in song and conversation by POW's is encouraged.
Townspeople of Aliceville will dress in 1940's styles and line the route of march as their families did and be encouraged to engage in conversation with the German POW's thru the fence. Relatives of former POW's from Germany will be invited to attend and may join in the march and prison experience as their fathers and grandfathers did. Relatives of the MP units that guarded the prisoners will be in attendance as well as the Alabama State Troopers relatives. The town of Aliceville will provide transportation to and from the camp and town for reenactors and will provide a meal Saturday night for reenactors. In addition, there will be a period style swing dance in town for all reenactors and townspeople in period clothing on Saturday night with period music.
